A stem cell is a cell with the ability to duplicate itself endlessly and to become a cell of virtually any organ in the body.  Stem cells can be thought of as “Master-Cells”.  Stem cells are found abundantly in the adult tissues in the body (primarily in the bone marrow).  Stem cells  circulate in the blood and serve to replace dysfunctional cells and to repair and rebuild damaged cells or aging and degenerating tissue.  Recent developments have discovered how to naturally release literally millions of the adult stem cells from the bone marrow.  These are known as “Stem Cell Enhancers”.

As we age or are under stress, the number and quality of stem-cells circulating in our  bodies gradually decrease leaving us more susceptible to injury and other age related health problems.  Just as other things such as antioxidants are important to protect our cells from free radical damage, these stem cell enhancers are important to support the release of adult stem cells, thus protecting proper cellular, organ and organ-system function in the body.

These stem cell enhancers are two natural botanical extracts from blue-green algae.  One extract contains an L-selectin ligand which supports the release of stem cells (CD34+cells) from the bone marrow.  The other extract is a polysaccharide-rich fraction named migratose T.M., which supports the migration of stem cells to the organs and organ-systems in humans and is needed for maintenance and repair.  A blind study on humans reported a 25% increase in the number of circulating stem cells after the use of such stem cell enhancers.

According to the researcher Dr. David A. Prentice, adult stem cells are being used clinically to treat many problems in humans.  These include reparation in autoimmune diseases, anemia and immune-deficiency.  Adult stem cells are also being used to form new cartilage in treatment of stroke and to repair the damage of heart attack.  Clinical trials have shown some improvement in patients with Parkinson’s disease and in those with spinal cord injury.

Although not F.D.A. approved, we see little reason for not using this naturally occurring botanical extract, for which no adverse effects have been reported, to repair the damages of injury and aging.  CHF #89 is such an adult stem cell enhancer.
