Description

Potassium Iodide is a salt form of iodine. It is a white salt added to table salt to make it “iodized” or is found naturally in real salt or sea salt. Our bodies re- quire stable iodine from foods for normal functioning of the thyroid glands. Nevertheless poor soil conditions may rob foods of sufficient iodine that the body needs. This could possibly cause enlarged goiter, hypothyroidism, extreme fatigue, mental slowing, depression, weight gain, and low body temperature. Potassium Iodide may help fill those voided nutrients.

Potassium Iodide is also used as an expectorant. It acts on the salivary glands and loosens and thins the mucous from the air passageway allowing it to be coughed up. It may be helpful in in long term lung problems such a asthma, chronic bronchitis, or emphysema.

Government studies have shown that exposure to radiation can cause irreversible damage to the body. When there is a release of radioactive iodine during a nuclear event, the thyroid gland absorbs it, causing severe injury to the gland. For such a condition potassium iodide is taken to help block radioactive iodine and protect the thyroid gland from injury.
